Conference Description

The Conference develops the line of scientific analysis of visual and spatial parameters of human existence, – tradition, initiated by the scientific conference “Visual Anthropology: Integrated Models of Communication” (Tomsk, September 18–19, 2014) and continued within the international scientific conference “Visual Anthropology - 2018. Modern City: The Construction of Public Spaces” (Tomsk, June 4-6, 2018; http://visual.tspu.edu.ru).

During the conference it is planned to consider the influence of the university on the formation, preservation and actualization of a historical city space, the role of the university in maintaining a comfortable living environment, developing and implementing various forms of urban communication, and organizing a program of visual ecology. The conference participants will also try to determine the university’s contribution in promoting the city image in domestic and international areas, to substantiate the university’s leading role in cultural development, to find out the influence of the university on the formation and correction of urban identity, to discuss the interconnection between university, city and harmonious personality. The transfer of analytical attention from “university in the city” to “city-university” basically reformates the general urban discourse. This methodological shift reflects the rising analytical and practical trend, according to which university doesn’t only occupy its special place in some urban space, but actively transforms and organizes this space.

Strategic Objectives of the Conference:

- development of scientific cooperation in the field of humanitarian issues of modern urban studies;

- creating the field of scientific discussion between Russian and foreign scientists for sharing research experience in the formation of public urban spaces;

- analysis and systematization of problems and research of cultural topology of the city (regional, national and global levels);

- using the results of fundamental urban studies in social and administrative practices of the modern city.

The goal of the Conference is conceptualization of the university’s role in creating cultural space of the modern city and in formation of urban identities.

The following sections will take place:

I. Educational space in European cities: from Antiquity to present

II. Transformation of the urban environment: creative practices and projects

III. University in the structure of a “smart city”: system functioning and forms of presentation

IV. Education in the city and the city formation: university in the city and city-university

V. Urban identity: from study to constructing

VI. City as a conceptual and artistic character: biography and autobiography

In addition, round table “Anthropological model of the city” is planned.

Important Information

Application deadline for participation in the Conference is June 1, 2019.

The application form is in Annex 1.

Candidates are welcome to e-mail their applications to e.speshilova@yandex.ru for Elizaveta Speshilova, the Executive Secretary of the Organizing Committee. Participation in the conference will be confirmed by an official invitation from the Organizing Committee. Invitations will be sent no later than June 15, 2019.

The conference fee - 500 rubles; it is paid at registration.

Working languages of the Conference: Russian, English.

 Conference Proceedings

As a result of the Conference, Conference Proceedings will be published. The organizers select materials for publication. All texts will be reviewed. All published materials will be assigned DOI. The deadline for submission of materials for publication is September 15, 2019. The volume of materials provided is no less than 15,000 and no more than 25,000 characters. See publication guidelines in Annex 2.
