15.09.2016  First year students of Polytechnic Institute have met with the history of Novgorod Kremlin

Yesterday, on 13 September, the freshman undergraduate students of the NovSU Department of Mechanical and Power Engineering attended an excursion to Novgorod Kremlin, which was sponsored by The NovSU Polytechnic School voluntary organisation “Patriot” within the framework of the Cooperation Agreement between NovSU and Novgorod Open-Air Museum.

Museum’s senior research associate Vladimir Varnaev guided the excursion. His lecture about the most ancient well-preserved fortress in Russia, events happening within its walls during centuries, about skills of Russian architects, military valour of ancient Novgorodian warriors got excited not only students from other cities but also students born in Novgorod.

St. Sophia’s Cathedral, the most ancient stone cathedral in Russia, the Episcopal Chamber, the oldest administrative building  in Russia, St. Sophia’s belfry were inspected with a lively interest. Magdeburg gates, which had been made for another cathedral but by lucky chance appeared in Veliky Novgorod, and other architectural monuments of the Novgorod Kremlin were also mentioned in the lecture.

Vladimir Varnaev focused on the monument The Millenium of Russia – the history of masterpiece’s creation, its numerous heroes and of course the author, Mikhail Mikeshin. During the Great Patriotic War Nazis hadn’t manage to take the monument away. Lost during the war fence and lanterns included into architectural ensemble had been recreated in Leningrad in 1970s.

Built in the end of 15th century and reserved until our days Kremlin walls and towers are of great value for architects and give good opportunity to explore features of ancient Russian military and engineering art.

The meeting with Veliky Novgorod points of interest started with the most ancient stronghold in Russia can be continued at the wish of students.
