18.12.2013  Art exhibition “Fragments” by Valentina Pepelyaeva welcomes visitors at the NovSU Scientific Library

On 17 December 2013, a solo exhibition of Valentina Pepelyaeva called “Fragments” was opened in the NovSU Scientific Library. Its  epigraph is an extract from the author’s own poem — “…I copy from a clean slate all the memories, feelings, time, and distance…”

The exhibition has landscapes, still-lifes, and portraits in different techniques — gouache, oil, watercolour, chalk — more than twenty art works. According to the author, almost all the paintings are new, made in 2013, but there are some early works befitting the theme of the exhibition, for example, some portraits were made in 1986-89.

At the opening ceremony, Valentina Pepelyaeva commented on the title of the exhibition: “For every one of us - an artist or not - life is a combination of fragments — feelings, thoughts, impressions, events. I have found no certain theme yet, I am excited by everything, interested in everything. Instead, of the utmost importance for me is the impression that my art makes on the viewer, the emotions it stirs in them.”

Valentina Pepelyaeva has graduated from Kharkov Art College Department of Fine Arts and from Faculty of Design, Kharkov Art-Industrial Institute. Since 1993, she lives in Veliky Novgorod with her family. Since 2005, she teaches special subjects at the NovSU Department of Fine Arts and Teaching Methodology. She used to teach Pictorial Art, Composition, Plain-Air, Styling Design, Sculptural Arts, and Prints. She is the director of the “Triptych” fine arts studio at the “Dialogue” culture centre. Valentina Pepelyaeva paints in oil and uses a number of different techniques of graphic arts and design.

Her paintings inhabit the uncertain edge between reality and fantasy. The viewer falls into her landscapes, still-lifes, genre-pieces, and portraits like Alice down the rabbit hole.

The exhibition will be opened till 20February 2014.
