III в.

Typology of knives of Aestians

The knives of the Aestians, the bearers of the traditions of the Sambian-Natangian group of the Western Baltic culture of the Roman period, who inhabited the Sambia Peninsula (now the Kaliningrad Peninsula) and its environs at the beginning of our era, have never been subjected to special research. In the proposed article, an analysis of the array of Aestian knives available to us is carried out. The result of the study allows us to consider it very likely that the distribution of combat knives (primarily type 2) among the population of Sambia with the arrival of groups of Western Germans, who previously inhabited the Jutland Peninsula, in the Amber Territory in the beginning of the 3rd century. We should not forget about the significant influence on the inhabitants of the Amber Region by their eastern neighbours — the bearers of the Velbark culture, who were intermediaries in the amber trade between the Aestians and the population of southern Europe. Type 2 knives in combination with details of balteus Vidgiriai-type baldrics were found in the burials of noble warriors of the Neman right bank throughout the entire 5th century. This phenomenon is associated with the spread of the influence of the traditions of the early squad of Sambia among the north-eastern neighbours of the Prussians. Among both those and others of the first third of the 5th century AD knives-daggers began to be used, dating back to type 2 knives and having both cutting and stabbing functions. The latter function was achieved with the help of the spike-shaped tip of the blade of a knife-dagger, which finds analogies only in the Roman gladii and the Turov-type knives ascending to them. So, the basis for the appearance of knives-daggers is type 2 Aestian knives and Turov-type blades.
